Governing Rules of Folders@melb
Our non-profit, scientific association aims to support Folding@home. We're trying to increase visibility of F@H's research by primarily engaging high-school students, while also increasing computing resources needed for their research. We will do this via consulting with academic systems (such as high-schools) to build relationships with their students, while also fundraising to purchase computing resources such as GPUs.
Although legally our unincoroprated association doen't have to consider the following, we have chosen to act in good faith to our potential partners (and the larger community we interact with). Our association will reduce risk in particular areas that the govening body of Australian charities has determined is important for good governance. Our organisation will determine (define) the level of risk reduction that is reasonable in each area.
Our fundraising techniques include trading on the share-market. All revenue raised will be used to only purchase computer-based hardware that assists the non-pofit organisation Folding@home achieve their mission [*]. Such shares will be bought & sold on behalf of Folders@melb by our trustee, Nicholas (Nick) Howlett (a member of our unincorporated association).
Our trustee can demonstrate his commitment to Folding@home via his personally-funded & self-build 'supercomputer' which is solely used for protein-folding computations (valued at approx. $AU1750- and which took 10+ hours to develop), in addition to other experimental (pilot) programs that have yet to achieve demonstratable outcomes. To help verification of his role as a trustee, Nick will ensure that he is able to demonstrate no financially-inappropriate activity via providing (relevant) personal, financial transactions to the ATO if requested by them.
[*] The assets and income of our association shall be applied solely in furtherance of its above-mentioned objects and no portion shall be distributed directly or indirectly to any member of the association, both while it operates and if it winds up.
